Hi, my name is Jeffrey Croy. I founded this site in hope of reuniting fellow crewmembers and to celebrate the career of the Yellowstone Class Destroyer Tender. I hope that through time "and error" we can make this site reflect on her accomplishments with pride and honor. We are a select few, and the privilege to serve on Yellowstone was definitely ours.

Stationed to Precommissioning Yellowstone from boot camp. Assigned to Deck 1st Division. I was in the first group of Food Service Attendents "mess crank". I took the DP3 test and PNA, however I did get designated DPSN and changed to S-7 Division. I finally made DP3 and it was effective on the day I got out of the Navy.

Great site, it's about darn time. Good to see that somone remembers the old girl. But, (a little critisism) you have a great comprehensive history of the first two Yellostones but the 3rd is lacking a lot (like the last decade). If you could include a little more history (all of it can't be good) I, for one, would really appreciate it.

If anyone who served with me during the gulf war remembers me and wishes to say hello at the above Email address , please feel free to do so. Especially Chris Rundell, Sarah Randall, Vern Brown, Ralph Warner, and too many others to name. I served from 1987-1992 and had a chance to be a part of the ship's glory years even if I was too young and obnoxious to realize it at the time. My memory of you all has softened, but not faded with time.
loving regards,

What a pleasant surprise! I have often wondered what happened to old AD-27 I look back at my experiences serving aboard her and realize how much my life has been shaped by those years. The memories seem to run together now but the outstanding ones are of long hours (some Navy, some personal) working in the heavy machine shop and learning a trade that I have enjoyed for a lifetime. Other memories are sun tanning on the helicoptor pad over the fantail in that great Mayport weather. Also, being a great chowhound I remember those great meals I had at the mess decks. I was always a favorite of the cooks because I would compliment them daily on their fine skills. Thanks for the great nostalgic trip!

I sure served with some great people on the Yellowstone AD41. I was a supply officer in S-4, S-3, and S-2 from 1981 to 1983. I left in December of 83 as more of the plank owners departed less people understood that if you are underway, and swing the rudder greater than 10 degrees, going over 10 knots, and a steady wind from either side, she will roll over. Sure enough, six months after I left the "stone" I read that she took a 45 degree roll.....my only thought was "I guess that knowledge departed with the last plank owners.".....I think of the 4.0 plus 1 often, especially the people who worked with me...I hope life has been good to ya.

I was on Ad-41 from August '79 to about March '82 in the Weld Shop (26A, as I recall) I watched the Ship being built at NASCO while I was going to "C" School at 32nd Street, then got sent to Pre-Com in Norfolk. They flew us back out to California to finish the outfitting at Mare Island and take part in the commissioning. They had to land the plane in Kansas City to take all the booze (what little was left) off because we were getting somewhat out of hand. I see from the site that AD-41 has been decommissioned...does anyone know how we plank owners go about getting our "planks?" The site brought back some good memories. Thanks.

Correction to your page about the USS Shenandoah (AD-44) commissioning date. She was commissioned 15 August 1983 at NASCO, San Diego, CA. I know, I was there and I have a photo of her on that day. There was a group of us in the photo when the flag was raised. The ceremony was when we arrived to our homeport in Norfolk and the Commissioning Ceremony was at the Pavilion in Virginia Beach, VA, 17 Dec 1983. I still have the wine bottles from the ceremony.
Thanks for correcting it. Hey fellow Plankowners of the USS Shenandoah (AD-44). I am going to put photos and other items of interest on my web page about the ships I served on, both now decommed. Visit: http://members.aol.com/Digup4me/moms.html Keep checking back to see if it's posted. Thanks.

Looking for some pictures on the Yellowstone & I suddenly ran into this Web Page! I was on the Yellowstone AD-41 From Dec. 88-June 91. I started out in Deck Division as a Boatswain Mate and was an undesignated Seaman Recruit at the time. Later to work as a Store Keeper in Supply and I later became an Illustrator Draftsman in Repair Division R-5. Great page! I've already found a great buddy's name on here. I never anticipated that I or the rest of us would end up in Saudi Arabia for 8 months and being in the war. It was a great experience being on the ship and so many things happened in 3 years. Look forward to hearing from old friends.

I found this site when I did a Google search for my old ship, the "USS Yellowstone, AD-41," to show to a friend of mine who was bragging about Great Lakes shipping. I reported aboard the Yellowstone on Christmas Day, 1984, and was transferred to Portsmith Hospital on Christmas Day, 1986 (I cut some tendons while doing engine room maintenance, and my tendons had become infected before the doctors noticed that my tendons were cut).
I'm easy to remember. I'm the guy who hated Rock Music.

I have some fond memories of my time on the ship, even on restriction, and I hope to come in contact with some old friends. I know that people that used to be in deck dept probably don't have computers yet, but if you do, and know how to use it, look me up.(Just Like Booda Blam)Peace.

Forgot the bad ones, almost, except of that working party that had to carry fire bricks on board and down, down, down to the bottom of the ship and at 6'3" cracked my head more than once as I kept forgetting to duck.

Reported on board Pre-Com as an SHSA, Bonged off in January 1984 as SH2. Worked mostly in the Laundry and Dry Cleaning shop. Met my wife onboard, she was one of the first groups of women onboard Yellowstone. Been married to her for 17 years now, (Teresa Payne) Retired from the Navy in July 1999, and loving everyday of it. Many good memories of the ship, from all the cars on deck coming from Mare Island to Norfolk, to Scappa Flow and many many others. This is my 4th or 5th attempt to get a message through. Hopefully it will register this time. I was assigned to the Yellowstone in 1946 on her maiden voyage. We sailed from Seattle to San Diego and return. Following that we sailed to Newport, anchoring in Narraganset Bay and began serving ships from the Atlantic fleet. Later to the Med. Our main objective there was to rebuild relationship with Italy and the North Africa countries. I would like to hear from anyone serving aboard her in "46 & "47. Especially anyone in the Comm. Divn. I was a SM3.

I was on the Yellowstone one time with a dear friend. He took me all around and showed me all that he could "without having to shoot me.":) It was great fun and I have often re-told the story to my students on or near Veteren's Day; as well as look at the picture of me sitting in captain's chair with this funny little hat on. I don't think I was supposed to sit there, but I was young and foolish! (He talked me into it, and he had a way of doing that.)
I know that I would have fallen many times down the steep stairs and would have not rested a night in the bunks, which were only described to me--one of those off limit places. It was after my brief 30 minute tour, I appreciated even more what my friend went through and what many men and women do daily to preserve what we have in our country. I know that I could never do what many of you did and are doing daily.
Thank you to all who served and are serving my country. One little email cannot express the gratitude I have for you.
God Bless.
